TWENTY-SEVEN

Wednesday 2335 hours

Katie had changed into dry clothes, wrapped herself in a warm blanket, and was on the couch in front of the fire when Chief Baker and Officer Lane showed up a half hour later. Cisco was at her side, never moving an inch away from her. The dog remained quiet but kept a watchful eye on everyone.

“Detective Scott, are you sure what you saw?” said the chief as he made notes.

“Yes, I’m sure.”

“You’ve been through a traumatic experience. Maybe some of the details might be hazy?”

Katie kept her frustration under control. “I’ve given you my report. Nothing is going to change.”

McGaven entered the room. “Looks like the only thing we have on camera are the beanbag rounds hitting the cottage.” He looked at Katie. “I’m sorry.”

Officer Lane came inside the house carrying a leather satchel. He sat down next to Katie and opened the bag, revealing a medical kit.

“What’s this?” said Katie.

“Officer Lane is an EMT. I want to make sure that you’re okay; otherwise, I’d have to insist that you go get checked out at the hospital, which is forty miles away.”

“I don’t think—” began Katie. She just wanted to put the incident behind her and move forward on the investigation.

“I agree,” said McGaven, interrupting her. “You should be checked out.”

Katie sighed but agreed under protest. The sooner she was checked out, the sooner they would leave.

Officer Lane took Katie’s blood pressure. “It’s a little elevated, but that’s normal after a stressful incident.” He checked her pulse, looked into her eyes to see if there were any signs of a concussion, and checked out her wrist. “Everything seems fine, but your wrist might be sprained. Put a cold compress on it and take some aspirin tonight before you go to bed.”

“Thank you. I’m exhausted.” Katie couldn’t help but notice that Officer Lane’s boots had mud and fine gravel caked on them. It was recent and consistent to the shoreline. “Were you out for a walk?” she asked, watching the young officer.

“Yeah, I always take an evening walk. It helps me unwind from the day.”

“Did you see anything interesting?” she said.

“No. I usually see deer but tonight it was quiet.” He didn’t look Katie in the eye as he busied himself putting things away in the medical kit. “You should make an appointment with your general practitioner when you get back to Pine Valley—just to be on the safe side.”

“Well now, I think we have everything we need for now,” said Chief Baker rereading his notebook.

“Aren’t you going to take the beanbag rounds as evidence?” she said.

“Of course. Officer Lane here will attend to that.”

“Do you use these types of rounds?” said Katie.

“No, we haven’t ever had the need to—we’re not a big city.”

“I see.”

“Will you be okay?” the chief said.

“Of course,” said McGaven.

“Give me a call if there’s any other problem. Most likely it was probably kids or a prank. We’ve been getting a couple of calls about vandalism at some of the nearby homes.” The chief
